Our Most Recent Reading Data (2022)
Gallup Analysis of the data from the US Department of Education:
- 130 million US adults (age 16-74) have LOW literacy skills.
- 54% of US adults have reading proficiency BELOW a 6th grade level
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (2022) data:
- 67% of US 4th graders do NOT read at grade level.
- 69% of US 8th graders do NOT read at grade level.
- 63% of 12th graders do NOT read at grade level.
The 2023 and 2024 data is going to be worse.
Our schools, teachers and parents are trying every day to help struggling readers. Sadly, the data shows that what is being done now is NOT ENOUGH. Our US kids need MORE HELP to read at grade level.
Struggling readers are more likely than proficient peers to:
- Drop out of school.
- Experience periods of unemployment.
- Live in poverty.
- End up in the criminal justice system.
